Robotic Flying Dragonfly Can Avoid Obstacles
An autonomous robotic dragonfly has been developed by a team of Dutch researchers.
The invention weighs the same as just a few sheets of paper, and can detect obstacles as it flies.
It moves through the sky thanks to flapping wings, and uses two on-board cameras and a tiny computer to avoid collisions.
When an obstacle is detected, the DelFly will continue to fly a small distance ahead before flying in a circular motion until the obstacle is no longer visible.
The technique means it can explore unknown spaces without assistance.
The DelFly can also perform an autonomous take-off.
Researchers from the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands say it could be used in a variety of ways, such as monitoring buildings in danger of collapse, inspecting pipes on the high ceilings of factory buildings and detecting ripe fruit in greenhouses.
Other non-industrial uses might include streaming live video of parties and concerts from above.
