Senator Dela Rosa Defies International Criminal Court’s Arrest Bid
Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, the former enforcer of President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial drug war, has successfully avoided arrest after his legal team appealed to the Philippine Supreme Court. They seek to block any detention without a valid judicial warrant issued locally.

On Tuesday morning, Dela Rosa urged his supporters, who had gathered outside the Senate building in Manila, to maintain a vigilant presence. “Keep vigil in front of the Senate until the Supreme Court decides,” he declared, rallying his base amid the mounting political tension.

Political Clash Intensifies Between Duterte Allies and Marcos Faction
Amid the escalating conflict, Dela Rosa directly challenged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is locked in a fierce political rivalry with the Duterte dynasty. Dela Rosa invited Marcos to pursue any allegations against him through Philippine courts rather than international venues.
“If I have an obligation, I will answer it in the local court, not a foreign one,” Dela Rosa stated firmly to reporters, emphasizing his preference for domestic legal proceedings over the International Criminal Court’s jurisdiction.
Senate Leadership and Legislative Power Play
The Senate, dominated by Duterte loyalists, elected Alan Peter Cayetano as its new president on Monday. Cayetano has committed that the chamber will only honor arrest warrants issued by Philippine courts, effectively resisting the ICC’s efforts.
Meanwhile, the lower House of Representatives, controlled by allies of President Marcos, has taken a hostile stance against the Duterte family. It recently voted to impeach Sara Duterte, the current Vice President and daughter of the former president, marking her second impeachment attempt.
