Fear and chaos erupted as Chad’s air force began aggressive patrols over Lake Chad on Friday, forcing both Boko Haram militants and local fishermen into desperate flight. The sudden aerial presence sparked panic across the region, complicating efforts to locate fishermen who have since gone missing.

Challenges Hampering Search Efforts on Lake Chad
The search for the missing fishermen has faced severe obstacles. According to local sources, the lake’s treacherous depth and limited access to boats have slowed recovery operations. Many canoes remain under the control of Boko Haram, restricting movement and access.
Usman, a community leader, explained, “Boko Haram dominates the fishing zones, shuttling fishermen between the markets and fishing sites while imposing taxes on their catch.” This control not only undermines local livelihoods but also hinders rescue and search missions in the area.
Escalating Violence Threatens Security
The Lake Chad region has witnessed a surge in violent incidents, including attacks on security forces, kidnappings, and raids on villages. These escalating hostilities exacerbate the risks faced by civilians caught between military operations and insurgent activities.

Controversy Over Civilian Casualties in Military Operations
Chadian military air strikes have previously drawn sharp criticism for causing civilian deaths. In October 2024, strikes targeting Boko Haram on Tilma Island reportedly killed dozens of Nigerian fishermen, raising grave humanitarian concerns.
Similarly, Nigerian military campaigns against armed groups have faced accusations of civilian casualties, although officials often classify such fatalities as unintended collateral damage.
In a recent development, the Nigerian armed forces denied reports of civilian deaths following air strikes in central Niger state last Sunday. Military spokesperson Maj Gen Michael Onoja affirmed that the operations were “executed based on credible, actionable intelligence,” underscoring the complexity of combating insurgents while protecting innocent lives.
