California and Canadian Passengers Under Close Watch
California health officials revealed that two state residents aboard the cruise ship are currently under medical observation in Nebraska. An additional two passengers from California have returned home, showing no symptoms of hantavirus, and no confirmed cases have surfaced in the state.

Canadian Response and Precautionary Measures
Of the six Canadian passengers on the cruise, four have safely returned to British Columbia after a chartered flight from Tenerife. These individuals, originally from either BC or the Yukon, remain symptom-free but have committed to a strict 21-day self-isolation period. The Public Health Agency of Canada warns this quarantine could extend up to 42 days due to hantavirus’s lengthy incubation period.
Meanwhile, a Canadian couple in Ontario is also self-isolating at home with no reported symptoms, according to Health Minister Sylvia Jones.
Fatalities and Confirmed Cases Linked to MV Hondius Outbreak
The hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has resulted in three fatalities. The World Health Organization confirmed two of these deaths were directly caused by hantavirus infections.
Two British nationals diagnosed with hantavirus are receiving treatment in the Netherlands and South Africa. Additionally, a British-American dual citizen remains quarantined in Nebraska as part of ongoing containment efforts.
