Jamie Muir, 33, has been sentenced to nine months in prison after sexually assaulting two women on a packed train heading to Edinburgh. The attacks, described by police as “opportunistic and sickening,” occurred amid a bustling crowd traveling to a major rugby match at Murrayfield Stadium.
Assault on Edinburgh-Bound Train During Rugby Day
The incident took place on Sunday, 16 November 2025, on a train departing from Inverkeithing, Fife. The Edinburgh-bound service was filled with passengers heading to the Scotland vs. Argentina rugby match held later that day in the capital. Muir boarded the train and positioned himself directly behind two women.
Sexual Assault in Crowded Train Carriage
Minutes after departure, Muir began sexually assaulting the two victims, exploiting the crowded conditions to conceal his actions. When one woman confronted him, he offered an apology and claimed confusion about his location. Fellow passengers quickly intervened, forcing Muir to disembark at North Queensferry station.
Swift Police Response and Arrest
The victims continued to Edinburgh Waverley Station and reported the attack to British Transport Police (BTP). A prompt investigation followed, with images of Muir circulated across police forces to facilitate his identification. Upon arrest, Muir attempted to justify his conduct by stating he felt “unwell.”
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
At Dunfermline Sheriff Court, Muir pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault. On 29 April, the court sentenced him to nine months in jail and placed him on the sex offenders’ register.
Police Statement on the Sentence
Detective Constable Crawford Gillies condemned Muir’s actions as “opportunistic and sickening,” expressing satisfaction with the custodial sentence. Gillies emphasized zero tolerance for sexual offenses on the railway network and urged victims to report incidents promptly.
“There is absolutely no place for this type of behaviour anywhere on the railway network, and we take every report seriously,” said DC Gillies. “If you ever need assistance while travelling, you can discreetly text us on 61016. Our officers can meet the train at the next station, and we’ll stop at nothing to bring sexual offenders to justice.”
