Wyndham’s Theatre

Wyndham’s Theatre was designed by William Sprague, also responsible for the Novello, Ambassador’s, Lyric and Gielgud Theatre amongst others, therefore next time you find yourself wondering why the architecture of so many of London’s theatres is so similar you have your answer. Sprague was a fan of classical styles, therefore Wyndham’s displays elements of ostentatious Louis XVI décor. The theatre was named in honour of the actor Charles Wyndham; in fact the plot of land where the theatre was built belonged to the Marquess of Salisbury who would only allow a theatre to be constructed on the site if it was dedicated to Wyndham.
Critically acclaimed plays written by Arthur Miller, Graham Greene and Harold Pinter were staged here to great success, recent productions have included ‘The History Boys’, ‘Avenue Q’ and stand up shows by Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey. Shows usually start at 7.30 pm with matinee performances on Thursdays and Saturdays. There is a bar on each level, and drinks can be ordered to save time between acts as well as being taken to disabled customers in the audience.
