James Holder, the 54-year-old co-founder of the renowned fashion brand Superdry, has been found guilty of raping a woman following a night out in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Details of the Crime Unfolded at Gloucester Crown Court
After socializing at a local bar, Holder and a friend went uninvited to the woman’s home in the early hours of 7 May 2022. Holder briefly fell asleep on her bed after using the bathroom. Upon waking, he called the woman—who was attempting to sleep in the lounge—into the bedroom and sexually assaulted her.
Holder denied the rape and assault by penetration charges, insisting that any sexual activity was consensual. The jury acquitted him of assault by penetration but unanimously convicted him of rape.
Survivor’s Account and Court Proceedings
The victim testified that she cried and pleaded with Holder, a married father of two, to stop during the attack, but he persisted. She eventually escaped the bedroom, after which Holder left her home shortly afterward.
During cross-examination, Holder’s barrister suggested the encounter was consensual and initiated by the woman. She firmly rejected this, stating, “Incorrect,” when asked if it was a regretted drunken sexual encounter.
Holder’s Defense and Character Portrayal
The court heard that Holder, a businessman and philanthropist, was described as “old school and chivalrous” towards women and expressed a strong passion for sex. He claimed the woman had kissed him first, implying mutual consent.
Next Steps: Sentencing Scheduled
Following the verdict, Holder was remanded into custody. The sentencing hearing is set for 7 May at Bristol Crown Court, where he will face the consequences of his conviction.
