Fatal M23 Crash Near Gatwick Shuts Motorway, Sparks Major Investigation
A devastating collision on the M23 motorway northbound near Gatwick Airport claimed the life of a young woman and left a man critically injured early Thursday morning. The crash, involving a single vehicle, occurred just before 5 a.m. between junctions nine and ten, prompting authorities to close the carriageway for a thorough investigation.

Driver Arrested on Suspicion of Dangerous Driving
Sussex Police arrested the 21-year-old male driver, a London resident, on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. During the incident, the car veered off the main northbound carriageway, leading to the tragic outcome.
One passenger, a 23-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, a 23-year-old man, remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Ongoing Investigation and Road Closure
Inspector Matt Wightwick described the event as “a tragic incident” and confirmed that police are diligently working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the crash. The woman’s family has been notified, and the northbound carriageway remains closed while emergency services recover the vehicle and conduct their investigation.
Authorities assured the public that the motorway will reopen as soon as conditions are safe and practical.
Traffic Disruptions and Diversions
The collision caused severe traffic congestion, with queues extending over four miles and delays exceeding one hour. To alleviate the disruption, National Highways implemented a diversion route advising drivers to exit the M23 at junction 10 and follow the A264 eastbound.
